A book “Inconvenient Truths” written by former inspector general of police and former FIA director general Tariq Khosa was formally launched in the presence of Sindh IGP Dr Kaleem Imam and a large number of police officers here on Friday morning. This ceremony was held over breakfast hosted by the Karachi Council on Foreign Relations (KCFR) at a hotel. The ceremony was attended by Chairman KCFR Ikram Sehgal, CEO Commodore (retd) Sadeed A Malik, Secretary Dr Huma Baqai, Ameena Saiyid, former Sindh Lt-Gen. Moinuddin Haider, dignitaries and officers of police, according to a press release.Speaking on this occasion, Dr Imam expressed that the image of the police department was torn not by the cop but due to lack of leadership. He said they were managers and responsible for this situation where no one was ready to trust in the police. Personalities like Tariq Khosa were role models for police officials, he added. He said the police were always on the forefront while maintaining law and order and over 7,000 cops of this force were martyred in the line of duty. He saw a need to enhance capacity and skills of the police, saying they had to ensure good policing.According to the provincial police chief, check and balance is very necessary for police officials but police managers will have to inculcate professionalism amongst them. He deplored that at present, everything was being run on an ad-hoc basis and every person wanted police to do policing as per their wish. If a football team was not playing well, the hockey team would not play instead; rather, we would have to improve the game of the football team actually, he added.Author Tariq Khosa discussed his book in detail and said that he had recommended a six-point doable strategy for reforms in the police and other state institutions. He also included eyewitness’ accounts of the hanging of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and a few more incidents.According to the author, we have the best armed forces with nuclear deterrence, the world has already witnessed our response to any eventuality on borders, and now we should not feel insecurity and should become a trading nation. The state would have to end any type of support for militants and extremists, and missing persons in Balochistan were now coming back home, which was a very positive change, he remarked.Curbs on freedom of expression were deplorable, social justice must be ensured as the state had no religion and should not interfere in religious practices by any minority, said Khosa. He urged that the armed forces, judiciary, politicians and all other institutions should join hands and work for the prosperity of the nation and the country. He said that we have lost the Pakistan of the Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and there are quarrels between the Pakistan of Bhutto and Zia. The first elected civilian prime minister, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, gave this nation the constitution of 1973, which was bulldozed several times but still the country was moving with it, he added.Khosa said he was witness to many incidents, including the hanging of Bhutto and the Akbar Bugti tragedy. He said he never bowed down to illegal orders of superiors. He said General Kayani changed the military doctrine which was carried on by General Raheel Sharif and now by General Bajwa. The civilian and armed forces’ leadership decided to wipe out non-state actors, which was a good sign, he opined.Khosa said that Punjab was the centre of extremists and militants and now we had to see what actions would be taken by the government. The PTI had given a good role model of the KP police and they should be given the credit, the police should be made accountable but it must be an autonomous force, he concluded.
