Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Syed Kaleem Imam claimed on Friday that investigators had found a major clue in connection with the attempted assassination of religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani in Karachi. He said about 70 threats were also looming in Karachi, where security had been beefed up following the Quetta incident. Talking about the recent developments in investigations into the attempt on the life of Mufti Taqi Usmani, the IGP said they had got some headway and soon it would be shared with the media and the public. He was talking with media persons during the launching ceremony of retired IGP Tariq Khosa’s book at a hotel in Karachi. Dr Imam said he was a resident of Karachi’s Azizabad area. “I played cricket till 1980. There was a good environment. I do not know when the youths got weapons in their hands instead of cricket bats,” he said. This is the second time when the IGP has claimed about a major breakthrough in the Taqi Usmani case. Earlier, a day after the incident, he had told media persons after laying a floral wreath at the mausoleum of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah on Pakistan Day that police had found clues to the identity of the attackers. He had said investigators had “some leads” in the case. “We know who is involved.”Six unidentified had targeted prominent religious scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani in Gulshan-e-Iqbal on March 22 while he along with his family was heading towards the Baitul Mukarram Masjid on University Road to lead the Friday prayers. His police guard and a private guard had been lost their lives at the spot while one of his drivers later succumbed to his injuries during treatment at hospital. The case was registered at the Aziz Bhatti police station on behalf of the state through SHO Adeel Afzal against six suspects riding three motorcycles, who had opened indiscriminate fire on two vehicles at Nipa Chowrangi.Security personnel have conducted dozens of raids in Karachi and other parts of the country and detained several suspects in connection with the attack. Two members of the media industry have also been reportedly taken into custody for their alleged involvement. Their arrests and connections with the case are yet to be disclosed, however. Earlier, Karachi police chief Dr Amir Shaikh had also hinted at the foreign hands’ involvement.
