Sindh’s chief minister said on Tuesday that the provincial police force was demoralised by the time the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) came to power in 2008.CM Syed Murad Ali Shah listed different reasons for that, including target killing of the policemen who participated in the Karachi operation, lack of training and latest equipment, and a poor salary structure.“The provincial government improved the morale of the police by equipping them with the latest training, and arms and ammunition, as well as increased their salary structure and compensation for the martyred policemen along with a job for the heir of the Shaheed and continuation of the salary of the martyr until his superannuation.”He added that these measures boosted the confidence of the policemen and they participated in the targeted operation launched in Karachi under the National Action Plan (NAP) so efficiently that they solved major terrorist cases such as the Safoora incident. The chief executive was addressing the participants of the 46th Specialised Training Programme (22nd Initial Command Course). There were 34 under-training police officers, including two of the Air Port Security.Shah said that Pakistan has a great potential to emerge as a prosperous nation if each and every one of us starts working honestly. He lauded the Pakistan Army who provided the latest trainings to policemen and extended their full support. The credit of the successful Karachi operation goes to the police, the Rangers and the intelligence agencies, he said. “Karachi was declared the sixth-most dangerous city but has now moved down to the 76th position. This was the joint work of the police, the Rangers and the intelligence agencies.” He urged the under-training policemen of the Specialised Training Programme to work for the helpless and the voiceless after joining the field service and make all-out efforts to get them justice from the courts by preparing the best cases.Talking about Thar coal, Shah said Thar has changed and now it has embarked on changing Pakistan by offering an energy solution from Thar coal. “We have realised the dream of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto by launching the first-ever 260MW coal power plant, and now work in Block-I and Block-IV has started and would generate more than 20,000MW in the next 10 years.”He said that there was a time when international investors had turned away from investing in Thar coal after the then federal government had cancelled the contract of Hong Kong-based investors who had started work at Thar coal.“Therefore, we decided to start coal mining and install a power plant in partnership with Engro,” he said, adding that it was the first-ever largest public-private partnership in the country.Shah said the provincial government is also working for generating renewable energy. He added that Sindh is producing over 1,100MW of wind energy and that installation of 14 new projects is under way. “We’re also going to start developing grid stations through a provincial company.”Talking about development of road network, Shah said that all the provincial roads, major highways such as the Thatta-Sujawal one and bridges on the Indus River have been constructed. He said the provincial government has served the people of Sindh but “there is an issue of perception with our government and we have to improve it”. The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary Mumtaz Ali Shah, Sindh police chief Dr Syed Kaleem Imam, CM’s Principal Secretary Sajid Jamal Abro, Home Secretary Usman Chachar, Finance Secretary Hassan Naqvi, Education Secretary Ahsan Mangi and others.
