Ghani wants Karachi cleaned before Ramazan

Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani has directed the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) to go for alternative arrangements in case the Chinese companies, which have been awarded contracts to dispose of waste in the city, are not performing in certain districts of Karachi as per the terms of agreement signed with them.Ghani gave directions to this effect while chairing a meeting at the SSWMB head office on Monday. SSWMB Managing Director AD Sanjani informed the meeting that the situation of municipal waste disposal was much better in districts South and East of the city compared to the unsatisfactory condition of waste disposal in districts West and Malir. The local government minister said he too had received complaints in this regard from union councils’ chairmen of districts West and Malir and some reports had also been received about Chinese companies stopping their work in those districts.“Neither we will be blackmailed in any case nor do we allow anything against the contract. For that very reason, in case the Chinese companies have not been able to deliver in accordance with the contract, their alternatives should be searched,” Ghani said.He added that unresolved issues concerning the district municipal corporations and the Chinese firms tasked with the disposal of municipal waste should be sorted out.Ghani said there should be no compromise on the situation of cleanliness in the city as the holy month of Ramazan was fast approaching. He directed the waste management board to take all the required steps in this regard. He said deputy and additional directors of the SSWMB tasked with monitoring the sanitation work should compile reports of their respective districts on a daily basis to ascertain performance of firms responsible for waste disposal in the city. The minister said such reports should be sent to him on a daily basis.Ghani directed the officials concerned to suspend those staffers of the SSWMB who had not been discharging their duties. He warned that he would be paying surprise visits to various areas of the city to personally inspect work being done regarding the lifting and disposal of municipal waste. The local government minister on the occasion was also briefed about a mobile phone application and a computerised system developed to electronically monitor the system of waste disposal work in various districts of Karachi.
