UN warns Pakistan of worst agricultural crisis in 25 years

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation has issued a warning for Pakistan to brace itself for the worst agricultural crisis in 25 years due to the locust invasion.

Crops in Sindh and Balochistan have been under attack by locusts for some time.

The UN organisation says a swarm of locusts is on its way to Pakistan from Iran and Africa and can harm the country’s crops even more.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had also written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan on the issue. He had warned the PM of a locust invasion after May 15 and asked him to make arrangements for spraying pesticides on crops using helicopters.

PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has also taken to Twitter to vent out about the federal government’s “negligence” in the matter.

In April, the UK’s Department for International Development donated £1 million to make up for Pakistan’s agricultural loss.
