An elderly woman recently died due to dengue fever at one of the private hospitals in Karachi, said Sindh Dengue Surveillance Cell officials on Monday.“Bilquees Begum, 61, a resident of the Pipri area in District Malir died due to dengue fever and its complications at a private hospital in Karachi on Saturday, May 11, 2019,” said an official, adding that the year’s dengue death toll in Karachi is now two.According to experts, dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness. A person has high-grade fever, severe headache and bleeding (haemorrhage) if they are infected with the lethal dengue virus that is transmitted to a healthy person through a mosquito bite.As many as 12 people had died due to dengue fever in Karachi in 2017, while two persons had died due to the mosquito-borne viral disease last year in the city. The surveillance cell officials said that so far 484 cases of dengue fever have been reported in Karachi, including 82 this month alone, adding that six people tested positive for dengue fever on Monday.Experts say dengue fever can be a lethal disease in case a person has a weak immune system, as the viral infection results in the dropping of the level of platelets in the body of the affected person. Symptomatic treatment is given to patients when they are tested positive for dengue fever.
