Afghan Loya Jirga to discuss US efforts for peace process

KABUL: Afghanistan has summoned a rare “loya jirga” — a big meeting for delegates from across the country — to debate the decades-long war and the efforts of United States efforts in promoting a peace deal with the Taliban.

As per details, over 2,000 people have been invited for the four-day long gathering amid tight security under a large tent in the Afghan capital.

A loya jirga, literally “grand assembly” in Pashto, traditionally comprises Afghan elders.

Last such jirga was held in 2013, when Afghan officials endorsed a security agreement that allowed US troops to stay in Afghanistan beyond their planned withdrawal in 2014.

A day earlier, AFP reported that the United States agreed with rivals Russia on China on a goal of withdrawing foreign forces from Afghanistan, a key component of a peace deal being negotiated by Washington.

A joint statement by the three countries called for an “inclusive Afghan-led” peace process.

“The three sides call for an orderly and responsible withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan as part of the overall peace process,” the statement read.
