Suspects’ remand extended

A judicial magistrate on Wednesday extended the remand of nine suspects in police custody for one day in the case of six members of a family, including five children, who had died at a government-owned guesthouse last month.The family was visiting Karachi from Pishin and had stayed at the Qasr-e-Naz overnight, during which this tragedy happened. Initially, it was suspected that they had died of food poisoning. Later, however, the investigation found that they had died of poisoning from a commercial-grade toxic fumigant, aluminium phosphide.The suspects, who included guesthouse staffers, were presented before the court of the District South judicial magistrate-VII by the Preedy police. The investigation officer sought an extension of the remand, saying that the interrogation with the suspects to ascertain some facts was not yet completed.The suspects have been identified as Nadeem Akhtar Shaikh, chief engineer of the Pakistan Public Works Department; Mehram Ali Barohi, supervisor; Zakir Hussain, assistant executive engineer; Sikandar Hayat, controller guesthouse; Sanobar Khan, contractor; Abdul Hameed, receptionist; Perwez Bhatti, sweeper; Nisar Awan and Sajjad Hussain.The judge granted the police one day to keep the suspects in physical remand and also ordered the IO to file a progress report in the next hearing scheduled for Thursday.
