An elderly man who was the general secretary of the Gadani Ship-breaking Yard Association died under mysterious circumstances during a police raid at his home in the wee hours of Sunday. The man’s family claimed that he died due to being manhandled by the police during their raid. The police, however, denied the allegation and said the man had died of cardiac arrest. The incident took place after the investigation wing of the Iqbal Market police station conducted a raid at the man’s residence in SITE’s Metroville area in the wee hours.Police claimed that 69-year-old Abdul Kareem Jan suffered cardiac pain when the officials took him and his son, namely Amin Jan, out of their home and sat them in the police mobile. The law enforcers said they later left the father and son on the road and tried to get away when a crowd gathered on the spot and started protesting against the incident, adding that the crowd surrounded the mobile and shouted slogans against the police, but the officials managed to escape.Police said Abdul Kareem Jan, his son and two others were nominated in an attempted murder case registered on February 11, adding that an injured Shafiqur Rehman had claimed that he was shot by the four a day earlier in the Ittehad Town area.Jan’s son claimed that the police had attempted to arrest his father in a fake case registered by a person who is known for blackmailing. He said he had told the raiding police party not to arrest his father because he was a heart patient, but the police dragged his father to the mobile, where he died of a heart attack.“My question is that if the policemen were right, why did they run away from there, abandoning my father who was taking his last breaths? My father was a social person and had a good reputation in the neighbourhood.”The family has demanded a post-mortem examination in the presence of a magistrate. Senior police officials have also taken notice of the incident and sought a report from the officials concerned.
